Here you will find some suggestions for the preparation of the upcoming events

3 Days Rucksack

In a 3 days emergency rucksack for short term escape situations it is not primarily important to be in search for super duper quality but it is important to have something on you – you will not starve in a few days but you want to have something to eat.

Such a 3 days rucksack is needed in local emergency situations, regional floodings for instance, evacuations if you don`t want to sleep in a „Fema“ - camp. This would be a situation where you still feel safe around you or when you know you will reach your target  destination soon. In private emergencies usually you would be rescued within a few days. In those cases this 3 days rucksack is also suitable.

The material for your 3 days rucksack don`t need to be expensive but also obviously it should not be crap either. But money usually is short and you want to use it also for your long-time stocks, supplies and gear at home or in your camper etc..

A rucksack used in a global desaster event though has to stand a lot more. Quality should bet he best you will find you may need it for a longer period of time, maybe years… And you do need a lot more stuff, for instance in order to build a shag and for hunting and growing food.

But as time is precious and wild times will be ahead of us we are concentrating first on our 3 days rucksack because it is easier to be assembled and put together

It should feed us at least for 3 days, give us shelter, warmth, should help us orientate and much more. For that you will need a rucksack big enough, sized at least 60 Liter.

Here you will find a preliminary list of what should be in there:

  • Robust clothes also for changing, plan for several layers; socks and underwear at least double amount
  • Extra pullover in case it will be cold
  • Water resistant jacket also protecting against wind and cold. There are light ones available which also can be stored well.
  • Additional pair of shoes if space available.
  • Safety goggles protecting against bushes and branches in the wilderness while running
  • Well fitting cap with an even surface (no wool), best with a peaked cap also against branches muddling with the hair.
  • Woolen cap against cold if you have to escape in winter time.
  • Robust and warm gloves
  • Sleepingbag
  • Isomatte or similar for protection from underneath
  • Biwacksack if you cannot use a tent
  • Small tent
  • Cooking utensils suitable for a rucksack i. e. military style
  • Emergency cooker, i. e. Esbit, small version for small portions. It will fit including inflammable matter into the cooking utensils.
  • Water bottle
  • Food and beverages for 3 days or more if you are planning to be on the road for a longer period. Important are meals to be prepared w/o cooking and preparation – you never know if you will be able to cook.
  • Knife, medium sized
  • Torch with working batteries (LED)
  • Multifunctional pocket knife (Swiss Knife, Leatherman)
  • 5 meter rope minimum thick enough to uplift a man out of a pit
  • 20 meter cord for various usages
  • 1 meter tube with a 1 cm diameter for sipping out of puddles
  • One time hand warming device (Outdoor-Shop)
  • Towel
  • Wet toilet paper better suitable than regular toilet paper as it is more compact and more effective
  • Sun protection
  • Dental care set
  • Small towels ot tissues (packaged wet, deodorized)
  • For women: tampons
  • For men: shaving prep; you don`t want to look like a looter or even worse, don`t you?
  • First-aid kit (blistering plaster)
  • Deer suet creme for feet skin
  • Aspirin (or similar) and charcoal tablets against diarrhoea
  • Desinfection agent
  • Water desinfection-tablets
  • Mini radio
  • Compass
  • Maps of the area
  • Pencil and paper
  • Important documents (Passport, ID, copies of Birth Certificate, contracts etc.)
  • Important addresses
  • Money in small cash notes
  • Small Gold ingot or bullion (small because you will not be able to get any change)
  • Emergency kit with sewing material, fish-hook, fishing-line, nails, drawing pins, signal mirror, blowpipe, matches (water resistant), lighter, razor blades, wire, adhesive tape, burning glass (plastic)

I am sure I have left out something but hopefully I don`t need the rucksack immediately. This way I still have time to fill it one piece after the other. Such a stuffed rucksack is rather heavy. That`s why it should be packed very carefully. Heavy items  should be put on top and close to the body, lighter stuff should be packed below underneath and away from the body. That is contrary as to how one would pack things normally but it helps incredibly carrying the heavy loads.

Then while carrying you have to put it down once in a while and adjust the belts accordingly so the rucksack is as tight as possible attached to the body and the weight lies mainly on the hips If the rucksack draws you back and pulls on your shoulders then it is packed wrongly and most probably the belts are not adjusted rightly. Adjusting it should be done over time w/o any rush in the “still good times” and put some effort behind this. Once the rucksack fits nicely you can start trial carrying. Train to carry it while hiking and do some spurts in the bushes, carry it daily at home, in your house until you almost fuse with your rucksack.

Once you are on the run you will not have the time fumbling around for hours to adjust the belts because the rucksack will almost knock you down. The speed of your escape and your endurance depend mainly on the right arrangement of the rucksack.

Now you will ask yourself: How much do I have to spend and how can I afford this?

If you buy everything new and shiny in an Outdoor-Shop then you will have to spend quite a substantial sum (but usually for good quality). You will reach a budget worth a 5 year supply for 1 person. And  as I like other 3 days rucksack preparers are rather preparing for a comfortable life at home or for a specially prepared escape target home most important it is for us to invest into a home supply in your home storage as first priority.

First I thought „get something ready as fast as possible and then expand later on”. That`s why I got my old travel rucksack out of my cellar, cleaned and brushed it and did some repairs. Now it looks wonderful again and did not cost me anything so far. The same I did with my old sleeping bag, which was still doing fine after I had some holes fixed. This way I have managed to get a stuffed rucksack ready w/o any major expenditures. Some smaller items like a compass, hand warming device and small tube and so forth I did shop.

If you don`t have anything old or used at home then you can try to look for special deals or get something second hand.

For a 3 days rucksack a simple tent will do fine and if you get a better one later on then you still have a reserve tent. Tents could be stolen or you are joined by a partner who doesn`t have a tent, then this will be a relief for both of you.

Additionally to my 3 days rucksack I also have prepared a small 1-day rucksack equipped with the most important things which I store next to my roof window just in case you have to escape a fire and you have to run over the roof to get out.

Additional Thoughts and Remarks:

If there will be a national, even an international or global crisis situation, a natural desaster or even cataclysm as would be by Code ELE (Extinction Level Event) through impacts (meteor/comet) and/or  Pole shift as we are expecting in this case you would need even more to protect and supply yourselves though knowing and reminding you all that I am referring to a survival rucksack and not a truck load of things one would like to have…:

Pepperspray/Maze against wild animals, hungry dogs (…and more)

Legale self-defence weapons (this obviously differs from nation to nation, check out your respective legal situation – you surely don`t want to end up in prison/custody while you want to save your lives…

  • Think of simple weapons like sport spins with metall bullits, hand-crossbow, Gun-crossbow, bows, spear …also to be used for hunting
  • Real fishing rod equipment
  • Water filter, ceramic i.e. Katadyn, portabel
  • Water resistant cover / Pellerine (camouflaged)
  • Extra belts and ropes for fixations
  • Extra small rucksack to be carried on your breast opposite of the main rucksack (for extra utensils, food etc.)
  • Bicycle as long as possible, it also carries some load
  • Never forget: can opener, spoon, nails, soap (!)
  • Don`t forget: Sugar based candy (no sweetener/aspartame etc.!), small bags of sugar, salt, pepper (you will get them for free in restaurants, coffe shops etc.), vitamins, canned ready to eat meals (emptied cans to be used as cooking devices)
  • Sun glasses
  • Small shovel, military style (if you have to dig in or build a protection)
  • Small axe
  • Head torch (LED)
  • Walkie-Talkies (if in a group)
  • Survival-books, Bibel (you will need those after 3 days…)
  • Small net to carry and dry herbs and plants
  • Bigger net for catching small animals
  • Dust protection masks, gas mask
  • Baggage trolley (alumnium) for the urban/road part of the escape
